A6: HUNGARY - Balvany North Site: field views

This page authored by Steve Kershaw

This page gives field views of the sequence and shows details of laminated limestones from the Balvany North site. The local succession consists of a sandstone overlain by boundary shales, followed by laminated limestones containing the microbialite. The sequence is made complicated by the common presence of bedding plane slip, so that it is difficult to demonstrate with clarity the nature of most bed contacts. Also stylolites are common, interrupting the fine detail of the succession.

Overview of Balvany North site showing pre-extinction limestones at the bottom, transition shales in the middle, and laminated limestones at the top (where the yellow 0.5-m scale is positioned).

Laminated limestones, containing microbial material in mid-outer ramp setting.

Detail of laminated limestones; the apparent sharp bed contacts may be influenced by bedding-plane slip, common in these partly-deformed rocks.
